Police, Election Offices Hit by Explosives in Mexico
An explosive device has struck a Mexican federal police building and another blew up in front of the National Electoral Institute in a northern city torn by drug cartel violence.
Thursday's explosions in Matamoros, which lies at the border with Texas, did not cause injuries or major damage, said Herminio Garza, secretary general of the Tamaulipas state government.
He said the first explosion wrecked a car parked in front of the electoral institute, two weeks before Mexicans vote on June 7 to fill seats in Congress and hundreds of municipalities.
Half an hour later, another explosive struck the facade of the federal police building, Garza told Milenio television late Thursday.
Authorities are investigating what kind of explosives were used. Drug cartels hold arsenals that include grenades.
The explosions took place the same day that President Enrique Pena Nieto was visiting another Tamaulipas border city, Reynosa, just 92 kilometers (57 miles) west of Matamoros, to inaugurate a highway.
Matamoros and Reynosa have been hit by a resurgence of violence this year that authorities link to the arrest of Gulf cartel leaders.
