The party of Nigeria's president-elect Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday won governorship elections in the economic capital Lagos, fighting off a tough challenge from outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan's party.

Akinwunmi Ambode of the All Progressives Congress took 811,994 votes in the key battleground state, beating out Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Congress (PDP), who won 659,788 votes.

A suicide car bomb targeting a police station in Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula on Sunday killed six people, including a police officer, and wounded at least 44 others, police and medics said.

The bombing came hours after a roadside blast hit an army vehicle killing six soldiers and wounding two in the peninsula, where security forces are battling an Islamist insurgency.

Secretary of State John Kerry will this week defend an emerging deal intended to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions, urging skeptical U.S. lawmakers not to put up obstacles that could scupper the tough negotiations.

"I'll lay out the facts," Kerry told CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday when asked about a different narrative emerging from Iranian leaders about the outlines of a deal agreed in Lausanne, Switzerland earlier this month.

A majority of Iranian lawmakers on Sunday demanded the country's negotiators publish a "fact sheet" on a newly agreed framework nuclear accord, while denouncing details laid out in an American version.

"In a letter, members of parliament asked for the publishing of an Iranian fact sheet, and so far 212 have signed it," Javad Karimi Ghodusi, a member of the 290-seat assembly, was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.

A Syrian regime air strike hit a school in the main northern city of Aleppo on Sunday killing five children and four other civilians, a monitoring group said.

"Military aircraft struck a school in east Aleppo city and killed five children, three female teachers and one man," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. 

The American embassy in the Gulf state of Qatar has confirmed in a statement on its website that a member of its security staff was injured in an assault.

It is unclear what prompted the incident, which happened on Thursday at the embassy in the capital, Doha.

Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan held talks on Thursday with Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea as part of the dialogue between the Free Patriotic Movement and LF and their plan to announce a “declaration of intentions.”

Kanaan said after the meeting: “The declaration is almost complete.”

Two top Sudanese political figures were freed from detention Thursday without explanation, days before national elections, their lawyer said.

Farouk Abu Issa and Amin Makki Madani were detained in December after signing an agreement to unite opposition to President Omar al-Bashir, who is standing for reelection on Monday.

Palestinian police have for the first time been deployed in three areas of the West Bank near annexed east Jerusalem, Palestinian and Israeli sources said on Thursday.

"For the first time, members of the Palestinian police wearing uniform and carrying weapons have been deployed in Abu Dis, Al-Ram and Bido," Palestinian police spokesman Louay Erzikat told AFP, saying the deployment had begun on Wednesday.

A group of 14 Palestinian factions said Thursday they backed a joint military operation with the Syrian government to expel Islamic State group jihadists from the Yarmuk camp in southern Damascus.

After a meeting of the factions in the Syrian capital, Palestine Liberation Organization official Ahmed Majdalani said the groups supported a coordinated military effort in the camp.
